Work with us at inc!

We're looking for a couple of superstars to join our team!

We have some exciting and rare opportunities to join the growing team at Inc Design Store!

Working from our beautiful, colourful, light-filled fun and ever-changing creative concept store space in historic Ōamaru, these are roles for  smart, capable, reliable people with a positive upbeat attitude to complement our growing team.

Backstory; we're a small family-run business, hustling hard to provide for our 5 children by doing something we love, and create a special store experience in Oamaru. We feel it's a huge privilege to represent the 70+ creative brands we've curated at inc and we do this 7 days a week. We do everything with love and extra care, and to provide our exceptional service everyday, all year round, we need some extraordinary people who really want to be part of this too, to help spread the load. To us, it's not a job - it's a real, true love. The moment this becomes 'just work' then we feel we're missing the point.... Behind the scenes we're a busy family and 'creative chaos' gets mentioned most weeks - keeping it real! (You can read our story in NZ Life & Leisure magazine).

1. Floral Assistant - ongoing permanent

2. Summer Retail assistant - fixed term

For both roles, must be available for regular weekend work as well as some weekdays.

Basically, you'll often be needed when Helen manager/owner can't be there because of kid things (after school, weekday appointment times, some weekends, parts of school holidays etc - these things change all the time). Actual hours will vary week-to-week and will most likely lead to more hours through 2027 and beyond. There is definitely some flexibility and room to grow for the right people.

Min 20hrs/week - more for the right people.

These two roles could become one full-time role for the right person.

Applications close and  intensive training begins early September 2026

1. Inc Floral Assistant: Permanent Part Time position initially, most likely leading to full-time - both weekends, weekdays .

This is a junior floristry role. You will be trained the inc-floral way, but if you have floral skills already to bring to the job we want to know!

Key duties - in this role you're many different types of skilled workers:

  • like an intensive care nurse (but for flower stems and buds, not people!) Checking them daily and tending to their particular treatment needs case by case
  • You're part receptionist: taking detailed order notes, updating systems, processing sending invoices, updating calendars, and being P.A. to the rest of the team
  • You're part psychologist; listening to the needs of our clients compassionately at their most joyous, as well as most heart-wrenching difficult times.
  • You're also like a kitchen-hand; scrubbing buckets and vases and keeping your workstation perfectly clean between projects
  • You're part Uber-Driver, but with fresh flowers on board!
  • You're also like a kung-foo wrestler breaking down flower boxes fast! Some heavy lifting is required, as well as physical abilities to bend, lift, up and down a ladder, in and out and about everywhere.
  • You're part factory-worker; manual repetitive processing to condition our flowers before we can be creative with them.
  • You're part cleaner: hustling around with broom, dustpan, shovel, compost buckets and recycling duties on the daily, returning surfaces to sparkle several times a day.
  • And of course, you're very creative. Both a dexterous crafter with your hands, and creative designer with your eyes; you understand the fundamental principals of design and have a finesse for working with colour, texture, balance to uphold the distinctive inc floral style, meeting the briefs of our clients.

Key attributes - have we described you?:

  • You absolutely adore flowers. You might even know the names of various flowers and the ways they each like to be cared for
  • You're endlessly particular; every detail matters.
  • Your're fastidious with fragile things like delicate petals, sensitive stems and glassware, and you're not the slightest bit clumsy!
  • You're dexterous; always known for being the one to tie a great bow from ribbon, the perfect gift-wrapping touch, and fiddly little details are your thing.
  • Although creative, you're also a super-fine-tuned organiser - attention to details in numbers, written works, and work spaces.
  • You're a truly excellent communicator: asking questions whenever needed, following instructions, passing on feedback, reporting back during shifts - in writing as well as in person.
  • You have a proven affinity in customer service roles - retail, hospitality or general "peopleing".
  • You are a support person, you think ahead, you trouble-shoot, you go above and beyond to help.
  • You love to be productive and cross-off to-do lists. You're a powerhouse working autonomously but also love being part of a collaborative team to reach goals together.
  • You have a great sense of humour, known for your lovely smile, and love to work to the beats of a great soundtrack.
  • You respect the values of small business, family-life, and desire to help the 'hustle'.
  • You're eager to learn, be adaptive, take on feedback and be instructed - this is essential to team work and upholding the unique inc style.

2. Inc Retail Assistant: Fixed Term seasonal role November - January inclusive. Could be a summer holiday job for a clever and energetic tertiary student.

Key attributes - have we described you?:

  • You're an energetic people-person, love to connect, chat, listen, and can tell great stories. You also know when not to chat. Sometimes that's key!
  • You thrive amongst good design; you spot it when you see it, you know it's value, you want everyone to know it's worth.
  • You treasure colour, pattern, texture, fibre, music, light... you know the difference between design and craft, and know the value of design process.
  • You're a life-long admirer and supporter of independent creatives; always seeking out an opportunity to 'support small' and lead a creative lifestyle.
  • You have a great sense of humour, known for your lovely smile, and love to work to the beats of a great soundtrack.
  • You respect the values of small business, family-life, and desire to help the 'hustle'.

Key duties:

  • Retail! Customer service, point-of-sale, cash handling, gift wrapping, problem solving!
  • Attending to the needs of our wide and varied customers; locals, domestic and international visitors - both in store and online.
  • Maintaining accurate records with our in-house stock and website systems.

Skills:

  • Personality and availability are the two key things we're looking for - we can teach you the rest!
  • Bonus points for skills in floristry, photography, social media, and administrative experience.
  • Some heavy lifting is required, as well as physical abilities to bend, lift, pop up and down a ladder, handle deliveries, precious packages, flower vases & buckets etc..

Apply creatively, in writing, and/or in person to Helen - please outline:

  • which role you're interested in
  • your availability to work, including any limitations
  • any relevant skills as detailed above as this is an essential part of our decision making.
