Work with us at inc!

We're looking for a superstar to join our team!

We're excited to share we have a part-time/casual opportunity to join the team at Inc Design Store! Working from our beautiful, colourful, light-filled fun and ever-changing creative concept store space in historic Ōamaru, this is a role for a smart, capable, reliable person with a positive upbeat attitude to complement our growing team.

Backstory; we're a small family-run business, hustling hard to provide for our 5 children by doing something we love, and create a special store experience in Oamaru. We feel it's a huge privilege to represent the 70+ creative brands we've curated at inc and for much of the year we do this 7 days a week. We do everything with love and extra care, and to provide our exceptional service everyday, all year round, we need some extraordinary people who really want to be part of this too, to help spread the load. To us, it's not a job - it's a real, true love. The moment this becomes 'just work' then we feel we're missing the point.... Behind the scenes we're a busy family and 'creative chaos' gets mentioned most weeks - keeping it real! (You can read our story in the current issue of NZ Life & Leisure magazine).

If you're just after a part time job, the work we have will probably overwhelm and disappoint. If you want to grow and learn with us, we need to hear from you. There's probably aspects of this job advert we haven't mentioned - you might even know what we need more than we do. We need to build a team who understand this.

Part Time/Casual position- Weekends, and weekday afternoons and probably more

This is a supporting role - to step in to assist staff on breaks, in busy times, and to support where and when needed.

Must be available for some weekend work (mostly Sundays, sometimes Saturdays). Must be able to assist for some lunchtime cover weekdays, and afternoons 2-5pm.

Basically, you'll be needed most when Helen manager/owner can't be there because of kid things (after school, weekday appointment times, some weekends, parts of school holidays etc - these things change all the time).

Actual hours will vary week-to-week and may lead to more hours. There is definitely some flexibility and room to grow for the right person.

Min 10hrs/week - more for the right person. To begin ASAP, training during March then casual/part time shifts as needed to support the team throughout the year. We anticipate extra hours during school holidays, between September through to January, for special events, and week-to-week if you have that flexibility.

We're all about making it work for you if you're our special person.

Key attributes - have we described you?:

  • You're an energetic people-person, love to connect, chat, listen, and can tell great stories. You also know when not to chat. Sometimes that's key!
  • You thrive amongst good design; you spot it when you see it, you know it's value, you want everyone to know it's worth.
  • You treasure colour, pattern, texture, fibre, music, light... you know the difference between design and craft, and know the value of design process.
  • You're dexterous; always known for being the one to tie a great bow from ribbon, the perfect gift-wrapping touch, and fiddly little details are your thing.
  • Although creative, you're also a super-fine-tuned organiser - attention to details in numbers, written works, and work spaces.
  • You're a truly excellent communicator: asking questions whenever needed, following instructions, passing on feedback, reporting back during shifts - in writing as well as in person.
  • You have a proven affinity in customer service roles - retail, hospitality or general "peopleing".
  • You are a support person, you think ahead, you trouble-shoot, you go above and beyond to help.
  • You love to be productive and cross-off to-do lists. You're a powerhouse working autonomously but also love being part of a collaborative team to reach goals together.
  • You're a life-long admirer and supporter of independent creatives; always seeking out an opportunity to 'support small' and lead a creative lifestyle.
  • You have a great sense of humour, known for your lovely smile, and love to work to the beats of a great soundtrack.
  • You respect the values of small business, family-life, and desire to help the 'hustle'.

Key duties:

  • Primarily assisting and supporting our team of staff in-store - everyday is different
  • Attending to the needs of our wide and varied customers; locals, domestic and international visitors - both in store and online.
  • Supporting the manager with a wide-range of creative projects
  • Maintaining accurate records with our in-house stock and website systems.
  • Maybe you're also great with kids, or dog-walking, or cleaning - maybe you can create extra key duties for yourself....

Apply creatively, in writing and/or in person - please outline your availability to work as this is an essential part of our decision making. Applications close 10th March 2025.
